Transition to Secondary

Helping pupils move into Year 7 feeling known, welcomed and ready for the next stage.
Moving from primary to secondary school is an important step. At Trinity, we support pupils and families carefully so that children feel prepared, confident and ready to begin Year 7.
As an all through school, Trinity is well placed to make this transition feel joined up. Our Year 7 transition is led by Ms Amanda Harvey, Head of Primary and Head of Year 7. This gives pupils and families a strong bridge between the Primary and Secondary Phases, with leadership that understands the primary experience and the support children need as they take their next step.
A joined up journey: transition at Trinity is carefully planned so pupils can move into Year 7 with confidence, belonging and clear support.
Welcome to Year 7 transition
Our transition programme helps pupils get to know the school, meet staff, understand routines, build friendships and feel ready for secondary school life.
A distinctive strength of Trinity is that transition is led by Ms Harvey across both Primary and Year 7. This helps us create a transition experience that is warm, joined up and carefully focused on what pupils need.
Who this page is for
For Trinity Primary pupils
For pupils moving from Year 6 at Trinity Primary into Year 7, transition builds on the relationships, routines and expectations they already know. Our all through structure helps staff understand pupils’ strengths, needs and next steps.
For pupils joining from other primary schools
For pupils joining Trinity from another primary school, transition helps them feel part of the Trinity community before September. Pupils have opportunities to meet staff, make friends, learn routines and begin to feel confident in their new school.
Why transition matters
A successful transition helps pupils feel safe, settled and ready to learn. It also helps families understand who to contact, what to expect and how Trinity will support their child during the move into secondary school.
- feeling welcomed and known
- building confidence before September
- understanding routines and expectations
- meeting key staff
- supporting friendships
- identifying any additional support early
- helping families feel informed and reassured

Transition days
Transition days help pupils experience Trinity before they start in September. Pupils meet staff, begin to find their way around the school, take part in activities and start building friendships.
These days are an important part of helping children feel calm, confident and ready for Year 7.
Summer school
Where summer school is offered, it gives pupils an additional opportunity to get to know Trinity, meet other pupils and become familiar with the Secondary Phase before September.
Summer school dates, booking arrangements, costs and places will be confirmed with families where applicable.
Support in Year 7
Family Groups
In Year 7, pupils are supported through Family Groups. This gives pupils a regular point of contact and helps them feel known as part of a smaller pastoral group.
Outstanding Trinitarian Buddies
Older pupils help welcome and support new Year 7 pupils, particularly those joining from other primary schools. This helps new pupils feel part of the Trinity community.
Pastoral support
Year 7 pupils are supported by staff who help them settle, build confidence and develop positive routines. Where additional support may be needed, families should contact the school so the right next steps can be discussed.
SEND transition
Where a pupil has additional needs, transition planning helps the school understand what support may be needed before the pupil starts. Families should share relevant information with the school as early as possible.
First day in Year 7
On the first day, our priority is that pupils feel welcomed, safe and clear about what to do. Staff will help pupils understand where to go, who will support them and what the day will look like.
Further first day arrangements will be shared with families before September.
