Primary School Day

A calm, purposeful start to the day, with clear routines that help children feel settled and ready to learn.
The Primary school day starts at 08:45 and finishes at 15:15, Monday to Friday. Pupils may arrive during soft start from 08:35, so they can settle into class and be ready for learning by 08:45.
Clear routines help children feel confident, organised and ready for the school day. We ask families to support good punctuality so that pupils can begin each morning calmly and take part fully in learning.
Primary school hours: the compulsory school day runs from 08:45 to 15:15, totalling 32.5 hours each week.

Arriving at school
Pupils should arrive between 08:35 and 08:45. This soft start gives children time to come into school, settle into class and prepare for the day ahead.
Children are expected to be in class and ready for learning by 08:45. Arriving on time helps pupils begin the day positively and ensures they do not miss important learning and routines.
A typical Primary day
Each day includes a balance of core learning, wider curriculum lessons, break time, lunchtime, worship, routines and opportunities for pupils to grow in confidence and independence.
Reading, writing, mathematics and communication have a strong place in the Primary day, alongside subjects and experiences that help children learn about themselves, others and the wider world.
Early Years
In Reception, children are supported through clear routines, adult led teaching, purposeful play, exploration and time to practise new skills. The day is designed to help children feel settled, build relationships and grow in independence.
Children take part in phonics, early reading, writing, mathematics, wider learning, worship, play, lunch and afternoon learning before the school day finishes at 15:15.
Key Stage 1
In Years 1 and 2, children continue to build strong foundations in reading, writing, mathematics, phonics and communication. They also take part in wider curriculum learning, worship, break time and lunch.
Clear routines help pupils move through the day with growing confidence, independence and readiness for each next step.
Key Stage 2
In Years 3 to 6, pupils continue to develop as readers, writers, mathematicians and confident learners. The day includes core learning, wider curriculum subjects, worship, break time, lunch and opportunities to grow in independence and responsibility.
As pupils move through Key Stage 2, routines help them prepare for the expectations of upper Primary and the transition towards secondary school.
Attendance and absence
Good attendance and punctuality help children make the most of school life. If your child is unwell or unable to attend school, please contact the school as soon as possible and follow the school’s attendance procedures.
Lunch and the wider school day
Children have a lunch break during the school day. Information about school meals, menus and lunch arrangements can be found on our school dinners page.
Some pupils may also take part in clubs, enrichment or wider opportunities outside the core school day. These are separate from the compulsory school hours shown above.
